What to Wear for Fall Engagement Photos: Beach Edition

Planning a fall beach session? Here's how to pick colors, fabrics, and layers that look beautiful on camera, featuring a sage green and pumpkin session at Montana de oro

Fall might be my favorite season to shoot on the Central Coast. The summer fog finally lifts, golden hour turns warm and glowy, and the beaches get quiet enough that it feels like you have the whole coastline to yourselves. It's the kind of light that makes everything look like a still from a movie.

The one question I get asked more than any other before a session is "What should we wear?" So I'm walking you through exactly how to plan a fall beach look, using Q & C's session at Montana De Oro as the perfect example.

Start With a Color Story, Not Matching Outfits

The days of matching white shirts and jeans are behind us. The most beautiful sessions come from outfits that coordinate without matching. Think of it like a color palette instead of a uniform.

Q & C nailed this with sage green and pumpkin orange. Together, they feel warm and seasonal, and they're soft enough to let the scenery shine. The green echoes the coastal grasses and bluffs, and the orange picks up the warmth of golden hour. Nothing competes; everything works together.

Fall colors that look beautiful on the beach:

  • Sage, olive, and moss green
  • Pumpkin, rust, and terracotta
  • Cream, oatmeal, and warm ivory
  • Mustard and honey gold
  • Soft browns like camel and chocolate

What to avoid: Neon brights, stark black-and-white combos, and busy patterns or logos. They pull the eye away from you two and can look harsh against soft coastal light.

Choose Fabrics That Move

The beach almost always brings a breeze, and I want to use it. Flowy fabrics catch the wind and add so much life and movement to your photos, and that's a big part of the cinematic feel I love to create.

Fabrics to look for: Linen, chiffon, flowy cotton, light knits, and soft suede. A long dress or skirt is a dream on the sand, especially one that can twirl or blow in the breeze. For partners in pants, soft chinos or linen trousers look relaxed without being sloppy.

Layer for Texture (and Warmth)

Fall evenings on the coast get chilly fast once the sun dips. Layers keep you comfortable and add depth to your photos. A chunky knit sweater, a cardigan, or a light jacket gives us options to switch up your look mid-session.

Texture photographs beautifully. Cable knits, ribbed fabrics, and a little suede or corduroy all add richness that flat fabrics can't.

Don't Forget Your Shoes (or Skip Them!)

Here's my honest advice: plan on going barefoot for part of the session. Walking in the sand and wading at the edge of the water always leads to the most natural, playful moments. Still bring shoes for walking to our spots. Neutral sandals, simple boots, or clean leather shoes all work. Just skip bright athletic sneakers, which tend to stand out in photos.

Keep Accessories Simple

A few thoughtful details go a long way: a wide-brim hat, delicate jewelry, or a cozy blanket to snuggle under. Anything that adds to the mood is welcome. Anything you'll be fussing with in the wind can stay in the car.

Most Importantly: Wear What Feels Like You

The best outfits are the ones you feel amazing in. If you're comfortable, it shows in every frame. You'll relax, laugh more, and forget the camera is even there. That's when the magic happens.
